Why our performance clothing is unique

There are as many manufacturers of functional clothing as there are stones on a mountain and leaves in the forest. And we’ll be honest: Many of our competitors make good products. And yet we believe our performance clothing, made of yak and camel wool, takes it a step further in technical performance, comfort, durability, and sustainability.

A MATERIAL MADE FOR CHAMPIONS

The differences between our products and those of our competitors start with our material. Functional clothing on the market falls into three categories: synthetic fibers, wool-synthetic blends, and pure merino wool. For technical performance, pure merino wool is the best choice. A blend of wool, synthetic materials, and polyamide can be useful when functional clothing is subjected to particularly heavy use, such as in the military. In such cases, increasing the proportion of synthetic fibers improves durability but comes at the expense of technical performance. Functional clothing made entirely or predominantly of synthetic fibers is never recommended. In the most extreme climates, wearing such clothing can quickly become life-threatening.

Yak and camel wool, however, surpass even pure merino wool in their technical performance. They are warmer and more breathable, regulate body temperature, withstand the elements better, offer a better warmth-to-weight ratio, provide greater protection against UV radiation and unpleasant odors, and are incredibly soft and gentle on the skin.

These technical properties make yak and camel wool high-performance fibers suitable for use in the harshest climates on Earth, such as deserts and high mountains. It was therefore clear to us that we wanted to develop a product that passes on 100% of this performance to the wearer. We are proud to be the world’s first and only manufacturer to develop performance clothing made of 100% pure, untreated yak and camel wool.

In doing so, we take advantage of two key benefits of yak and camel wool: their high breathability and light weight let us weave a thicker yarn into a heavier fabric without sacrificing breathability or significantly increasing the garment’s overall weight.

Our T-shirts and long-sleeve tops therefore feel at first glance like warm knit sweaters—but in reality, they are true performance fabrics that surpass even merino wool in their ability to regulate your body temperature.

In this way, we’ve developed a solution to a dilemma that has long plagued the functional apparel industry: when finely knitted, merino wool is a material that wonderfully supports the body’s temperature regulation—but because it’s so thin, it’s also very susceptible to abrasion and tends to wear out quickly. That’s why the industry often blends synthetic fibers into merino wool—while this extends durability and makes the wool more robust, it comes at the expense of technical performance.
